But i [...]]]> Hi, i have written this old post about an italian online newspaper site, showing a subscription proposal personalized showing my mobile phone number… I was really puzzled about that. I got a lot of hints from a lot of people. Someone suggested to inform the “garante della privacy” (a sort of privacy agency). But i really prefer a technical solution.

My solution of choose is to set up a VPN.
Before to start the technical description i want to say why i prefer to set up a vpn instead to use a proxy.
I do not like to use proxy because, if you use a proxy the manager of the proxy can know everything that you do on internet. And i have no time to make a proper set-up of a squid proxy configuration on one my computers in a server farm.

So i have followed this tutorial: http://docs.cslabs.clarkson.edu/wiki/Install_PPTP_on_CentOS_5.

For test purpose i have used the following script:


#!/bin/bash

/sbin/iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -o eth0 -j MASQUERADE
/sbin/iptables -A FORWARD -i ppp+ -o eth0 -j ACCEPT
/sbin/iptables -A FORWARD -i eth0 -o ppp+ -j ACCEPT

Another 5 minutes of configurations on my tablet: et voila! now i can acceed to internet from my vpn… and these fine newspaper are no more able to show my mobile phone number… And i am happy.

Now a statement: i think that online newspaper have all the rights to sell their informations. But i really do not understand why they want to know my mobile phone number.

We all knows things about google glasess. But google glasses seems no more the only glasses on market. Hereby follow a short list of products:

So the items on the list are growning. This is good. Some of these products have their sdk available.
Probably very soon we will see a lot of new applications available in the various app stores…

So: where is the problem? I was trying it reading some italian newspaper internet site. I see in the past that some of them have the habit to ask for a fee if you try to read from a mobile device. Today i found that one of these newspapers was proposing a subscription. Ok, this is normal in web 2.0… No dear friends, no this do not seems normal at all. They was proposing a subscription based on MY MOBILE PHONE NUMBER. So seems that at least one of the Italian mobile isp was giving away my mobile phone number to some internet site.
This do not like to me.

When i will get some spare time, i will configure my mobile phone to avoid this kind of things. And i will make a page on this site explaing a way to maintain my privacy.
